In the build up to the Allied invasion in Northern France in 1944, a outstanding deal of preparation and organizing was required. Data was frequently being harvested by a community of agents whilst materials and machines were being brought to England. These would be necessary all through and just after what was and still is the largest invasion force ever assembled.

Organisation and exercises was a necessary aspect of the plans. Rangers who were to attack Point du Hoc became proficient by climbing cliffs and soldiers staged practice beach landings. A big component of the planning of secrecy and the locals of the UK were required to play their part. In Devon, an area called Slapton Sands was identified as a superb practice area due to the parallels with the Utah landing beach in Normandy.

Exercises for the landings started in late 1943 with the main invasion intended for June 1944. With 3,000 residents were evacuated from the vicinity in and around Slapton Sands. Many different exercises were organised and certainly one of the biggest was Operation Tiger with roughly 30,000 men (approximately a 3rd of the current strength of the British Army) were to be involved.

Exercise Tiger occurred in late April 1944. The first practice landings were carried out without any difficulties but throughout the exercise planned for the early hours of 28th April 1944, disaster struck. German E-Boats operating from Cherbourg intercepted a convoy of 8 LST (Landing ships). They aimed torpedoes at the LSTs and desperate men jumped into the freezing waters to get away the sinking ships. A good number of had not been taught how to put on their life vests and drowned.

In addition to the E-Boat attacks, more men died on the beaches themselves. Using live ammo had been sanctioned and together with the fatalities in the sea, more men were killed by friendly fire once they strayed into the wrong sections of the beaches.

Overall in excess of 900 men were killed during Exercise Tiger and it was nearly forty years before the facts were made public. Ironically, only nearly 200 men died on Utah Beach during the real landings in Normandy on 6th June 1944. Today, a Sherman Tank is on display at Slapton Sands as a memorial to the men who died throughout Exercise Tiger.

The D-Day landings at Normandy were carried out by the largest invasion force the world had seen. Exercise Tiger had been part of the preparations for the invasion.

Crystals have always been associated with elegance and fortune. With its cost and so many aesthetically appealing items made of crystal, it is no wonder that crystal remains to be one of the most popular precious item. Whether it is a large crystal chandelier or small crystal favors for weddings, people do appreciate its beauty and value. So what about a structure made of crystal? Despite its name, the Crystal Palace in London that was inaugurated on 1851 was not really made of crystal but rather crystal-like materials like glass. From a distance, this architectural feat seems to shine and glitter with hundreds of square feet of glass that surround the structure.

It took Joseph Paxton years to plan and design the structure and William Cubitt engineered it. It also took additional manpower from France to complete it on time, and more than 13 million pounds to build the structure. Initially, indeed for the Great Exhibition of 1851, the building had its share of challenges until its grandeur ended on the evening of November 30, 1936.

The Grand Exhibition was the event where exhibitors around the world totaling to more than 10,000 gathered and showed their latest innovations. They had almost a million square feet to hold the exhibits and eventually the size of the structure was able to hold concerts and other public activities. The structure featured a large fountain called the Crystal Fountain that stood 27 feet tall. It was also the first structure to have a major public toilet system where visitors can pay up a penny for its use.

The structure was then moved to Penge Place where water fountains and landscaped gardens were placed. When it seemed that the public did not have the time or interest in the Crystal Palace, they started to put stalls and booths which contradicted the elegance of the place. The building faced several other problems until a major catastrophe defeated it. It started as a small fire in one of the offices inside and then eventually spread through the building. Even with hundreds of firefighters around, the fire just really seemed to be too big to handle.

The Crystal Palace leaves with it a legacy that London will always be proud of. With its innovation and luxury and many firsts that were held in it, the Crystal Palace will always be revered as one of the pioneers in architectural history.

There are a number of government incentives on offer to get more people using solar power in an age where there are binding EU targets to stick to. By 2020 all member states must be using 15% of all energy from renewable sources to help reduce the effects of global warming. Currently the amount of UK renewable power only accounts for 1% of its energy mix.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change are launching the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in April 2011. This has been set up so that the population will begin using natural power sources like the sun, air and water instead of fossil fuels. Not only will you be paid for the energy that you generate but you will also make a saving on your bills.

Anyone can qualify for the campaign from private households to large businesses as long as they are in England, Scotland or Wales. The solar installation you own must have been fitted after July 15th 2009 in order to qualify for the scheme. With the expected price fall of solar equipment people who take part in the RHI from the beginning will profit best from it. With those joining standing to be paid a maximum of 18p for every kilowatt hour (kWh) of energy generated, even if it isn’t used.

The German feed-in tariff system has been available for a few months now for families who produce renewable power. The amount households can be given is up to 36p/kWh, which can rise by 5p if the home is empty and the power is sent to the national grid. An average family could earn a reward of up to 900 while also saving 140 on their bills for every year involved in the scheme.

Despite these measures it is still very expensive to convert to solar power with some installations costing 10,000. They are, however, expected reduce the payback time from 14 years to ten.

The UK Government’s inventives are sure to encourage the installation of more solar pv panels in Britain.

When considering solar panels in the UK the effect the climate has on them is an expected concern. Britain is world famous for its heavy rainfall and large amount of cloud cover but will these really impact on this energy source? Especially as the largest solar industry is in Germany where there are very similar weather conditions.

Photovoltaic cells have been constructed to cope with all but the fiercest weather conditions. But their ability to function can be limited by cloud cover and storms, in some cases making them half as effective. We do receive only 60% of the sunlight of the Equator but a direct light source is not needed to collect solar energy.

The panels will be rendered useless when covered in snow and will not function properly until it has all gone. They can also be damaged by thunderstorms or hail. This can potentially shatter parts of an installation and a direct lightening can also break the equipment.

But there is a rare occurrence called ‘edge of the cloud effect’ which boosts energy collection in adverse weather conditions. However, this more than likely won’t produce the same amount of energy which is lost on particularly overcast days. Cumulus clouds, though, are able to increase the amount of light reaching panels, as they are light and fluffy which amplifies the sun’s rays.

Plans and legislation implemented by the previous Labour government shows they felt solar power can work for Britain. With figures released by the Treasury showing that it should now take 25% less time for the savings a solar installation makes to pay for itself, since the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive scheme in April 2010. Even the projected lack of roof space in already overcrowded cities will is thought to be largely counteracted with the ability to place panels in available garden space or land.

Being able to purchase things you need is wonderful especially if you can do it while tax free shopping. This opportunity does not come around all the time but there are specific times and places that you can take advantage of this kind of shopping. When you find the chance, take full advantage of it.

Whenever you buy anything there are taxes. There are normal retail taxes, sales or goods taxes and there can be a value and consumption added tax as well. These taxes make sure that where you are gets their piece of the pie.

Traveling to Europe is more than just pretty scenery, the history of old buildings, and the delicious food you can eat. You can also shop till you drop and not have to pay taxes when you take it home. When you buy it there is a value added tax but that is refunded when you leave and visit customs and have a stamp. Keeping track of your purchases with receipts is important to prove what you bought and what you paid.

The goods you purchase must be for personal use. Keep the receipts to prove the purchases and the paid taxes. When you arrive home you need to have a stamp from customs. Then the refund will be issued.

Some states do not have sales taxes. Visiting Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon or Delaware and you will not have to pay any taxes. However, there are taxes on certain items such as cigarettes, gas, meats or alcohol.

New York created a way to raise shopping for a week in 1996. Now it has become a tax free shopping weekend that runs from Friday to Sunday. Thirteen other states use this idea. The weekends are usually planned for high shopping times like holidays or even the back to school bonanza.

Taking advantage of these special weekends mean some plans on the part of the shopper. First you need to make sure you make a budget to keep you on track and to not impulse buy and over spend. Make sure you have done your homework and know what stores have the best prices and bring coupons to understand the tax free structure.

The chance to do some tax free shopping rarely occurs so make the most of it when you can. But pay attention to what you are buying and how the discount works so you do not end up missing a great deal.

Tax free shopping is a privilege reserved for those who are visiting the UK from outside the EU. It’s a very straight forward thing to do to claim back the tax you will have paid on your purchased items and so tax free shopping is really very easy.

A lot of people are searching for ways to save money in these hard times. You may not have given a lot of thought to tax free shopping. Read on to learn some ways that you can save money on your shopping trip by not having to pay a sales tax.

A lot of people are searching for ways to save money in these hard times. You may not have given a lot of thought to tax free shopping. Read on to learn some ways that you can save money on your shopping trip by not having to pay a sales tax.

If you travel internationally, find out if the country you are travelling to offers refunds on sales taxes paid on items bought in their country. There are many websites that offer information on where you can shop tax free and how to apply for a refund of sales taxes that you may have paid.

Some states within the United States, such as Louisianna and parts of Texas, will refund sales tax paid to international visitors. There are some restrictions so you will need to find out from the state what they are and how you can get your refund.

Some states do not have a sales tax at all so you can shop tax free there anytime. Delaware and New Hampshire are two examples of states with no sales tax. If you live close to a tax free state and have a lot of shopping to do, bit may be worth it to travel a little way to save a lot.

Many states hold an annual tax free holiday. These are usually held in late summer right before school starts. Not everything is tax free so you need to know what items you can buy that will qualify. Usually, you can purchase back to school supplies, clothes, computers and other items. Not all states hold these sales at the same time, so if you live near the border of another state, be sure to watch for their tax free holiday sales as well. And if the sales are held at the same time, sometimes eligible items will vary from state to state so check your neighboring states list to see if they have an item you need that your state does not.

Before you leave on your shopping expedition, make a list of the eligible items that you need to buy. Also be sure to browse through store sale ads as many will run items on sale that are eligible as a tax free purchase. If you are looking for a more expensive item such as a computer, it is a good idea to shop for that first. The more expensive items sometimes have drastic price cuts in order to make the item eligible for the tax free holiday. A lot of times, stores only have a few quantities on hand and they can sell out quickly.

You may have to spend some time doing checking to see what items qualify and making a plan for your shopping expedition, but you may find that you can save quite a bit of money by going tax free shopping!

Find the joy of tax free shopping and how much you can save. Get the right time frame for tax free shopping to ensure you shop at the right time. Head online today and learn more.

Gold coins are extremely beautiful items and collecting them goes back to when coins were first issued in pre-Roman Europe. However, it was only in the Middle Ages that the amassing of gold coins became a leisure pursuit amongst the aristocracy and merchants who could afford to save such valuable items for their beauty and historical importance alone.

Coin collecting in general is still a very popular hobby enjoyed by millions of people of all ages. School children all over the planet have small collections of foreign coins. Later, that hobby might develop into collecting coins from one’s own country. For example, it is simpler and cheaper to collect a cent or penny from every year in the 20th Century in your own country than a foreign country.

This raised level of collecting coins can later become an expensive hobby once one has started working and has more money to spend. One might choose to specialize in collecting gold coins from a specific period or of a specific denomination. Dollar and sovereign coins are very popular in this regard.

In the USA, gold coins were in circulation from 1838 to 1933. The first design was the Liberty Head Bust but this was changed in 1907 to the Indian Head and Saint Gaudens motifs, which were used until 1933. The difficulties posed by the Great Depression caused gold coins to be recalled to be melted down. This made them scarcer and therefore more valuable.

In the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe, gold was used for coins from before the birth of Christ and many exemplars of these Roman and Celtic gold coins still exist today. Gold is no longer used as currency in Europe either, although in the UK, a gold sovereign is still worth one pound. The motif on the reverse is George and the Dragon, while the reigning monarch’s head is on the obverse

South Africa minted its first gold coin named the Krugerrand in 1967. The Krugerrand has no face value because it was not intended to be used as currency. It is made of one ounce of pure gold and is usually purchased solely for investment reasons. Since then other countries have also issued bullion or investment coins. For instance, Canada manufactured the Gold Maple Leaf in 1979 and Australia made the Nugget in 1981.

In the days of the Gold Standard, countries had to equate the value of their currency with the amount of gold they held in reserve. That meant that if a country printed paper money without buying more gold to back it, the value of the paper currency would fall in relation to foreign currencies.

Different countries came off the Gold Standard at slightly different time, but most of them dropped the standard in or around 1971.

Collecting gold coins is a fine pastime, but it ought not really be seen as an investment, because old gold coins carry a premium to the value of gold inside them. This value is sentiment and that can change rapidly. If you want to collect gold coins all well and good, but if you want to buy gold for an investment, then buy bullion coins or bars.

When traveling abroad there is that small thrill felt when passing by the duty-free store tucked into various international airports selling all manner of goods including perfumes, alcohol, and chocolates for purchase sans sales tax. With the every day reality of paying taxes, the moment a consumer can free themselves from it, the more attractive the shopping item becomes. Beyond the already tax-free shops, when traveling into the European Union (EU) from a non-EU country, tax-free shopping as a non-EU resident is possible by reclaiming taxes on a number of retail goods.

What consumers know in the United States as sales tax, the European Union classifies as value added tax, or VAT. When traveling abroad with the EU, VAT will become a familiar percentage added to all purchased goods. Member countries within the EU are not able to reclaim any VAT on their purchases unless they are to be sent out to non-EU countries.

The value added tax or EU-VAT, encompasses all member countries of the union and so becomes an issue for non-EU dwelling residents traveling abroad within the European Union. Members of the EU are unable to take advantage of a VAT refund unless the items are purchased to be sent outside of the EU.

Going through the paperwork process of refunding EU-VAT is not one that has to be accomplished alone. There are a number of reputable companies with the technical experience and established retail relationships to do the work for you.

A number of companies are available for utilization in making the refunded of EU-VAT a simple transaction requiring only that the consumer collect and save all receipts on good purchased in EU countries and visit customs before leaving the EU to collect an export validation stamp.

So, you’ve come home with your purchases, receipts, and customs approved export validation stamp, now what? Reclaiming your paid EU-VAT is simple in the hands of a number of companies who specialize in the red-tape and hassle of requesting refunds.

One company, Premier Tax Free, is partnered with over 75,000 worldwide retailers. With the company’s technical expertise, dealing with international retailers will be free of the red-tape and hassle of tax free shopping for non-EU residents. Receipts, provided by you, are sent back to retailers in the effort of requesting a VAT refund.

Many stores in the US will hold tax free shopping days that shoppers can take advantage of. These are at particular times each year and shoppers can get some real bargains during them. Stores will also offer other discounts in order to entice shoppers through the doors. If you want to take advantage of these lower prices you need to know how to get your tax free shopping right.

Get hold of an online state list to find out which products are being sold tax free. If you don’t know this you could find that you have spent more than the permitted limit.

Make the most of your time before the sale to compare the price of products you are interested in. Some goods are cheaper online, so make sure you take a look online.

Before you step foot outside write a list of the things you would like to buy. It can be so easy to spend far too much money when you see things at really reduced prices. But stay sensible and only buy the items that are on your list. That way you will stay within your budget.

During sales that offer products without tax the majority of stores will open early and close later. So choose the time that you go shopping wisely and you could avoid the crowds. This will not only save you time, but also give you the chance to browse at your own pace. There is nothing worse than shopping in an overcrowded store and having to make fast decisions on items.

To get the most from tax free shopping take notice of this advice and act on it. Doing this will enable you to grab some great deals which are tax free and save yourself time and money.

Go out for some VAT free shopping. With the tax free shopping times it’s a wonderful way to be able to save money. So enjoy those times and learn when they happen by going online.
